What makes Venetian enamel authentic?

In the world of mosaic the term "Venetian enamel" is used often and willingly. On websites, in catalogs, in the brochures of many suppliers. But for those who truly know this material, and for those who have been producing it for generations with their hands in the fire, the words have a precise weight.

A authentic Venetian enamel It's not a commercial label or an evocative suggestion. It's the result of a well-defined physical and chemical process, specific raw materials, and a technique passed down through generations of master glassmakers.

What the technical literature says

Isotta Fiorentini Roncuzzi is among the most authoritative Italian scholars of mosaic art. A chemist by training, she has taught color chemistry at the Gino Severini Mosaic Art Institute and the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna, and is a founder of the International Association of Contemporary Mosaicists.

In his reference texts, including "Mosaic. Materials, techniques and history" (MWeV, Ravenna 2001, with Elisabetta Fiorentini) and "Art and technology in mosaic" (1971), he describes with scientific rigor the nature of the Venetian enamels and clearly distinguishes them from any other mosaic material.


According to Fiorentini Roncuzzi, Venetian enamel is an opaque vitreous mass obtained by direct fusion at high temperatures of mineral raw materials, mainly silica, calcium oxide and alkaline fluxes, to which metallic oxides are added for colouring, opacifying and stabilising purposes.


It is this precise combination - hot fusion, full opacity, full-body colouring - that technically defines authentic Venetian enamel and clearly distinguishes it from transparent glass, cold-pressed products and imitation glass pastes.

The scholar also highlights a crucial historical element: the production of Venetian enamels on Murano had virtually ceased between the 13th and 19th centuries. It was master glassmaker Lorenzo Radi, in the second half of the 19th century, who rediscovered and revived the ancient techniques, recovering formulas and processes that seemed lost forever. The Murano Glass Museum documents how Lorenzo Radi contributed to the recovery of gold-leaf glass pastes for mosaics, marking a decisive turning point in the history of Venetian glass art.

The Chain of Knowledge: From Lorenzo Radi to the Donàs

What makes the history of Vetreria Artistica Mario Donà & Figli unique is not only its length, but also the direct and documented continuity of the transmission of knowledge. In 1926, Beniamino Donà founded the first company in Murano, availing himself of the collaboration of some artisans trained in the workshop of Lorenzo Radi, of which he also acquired the equipment. Not a generic Murano inspiration: a direct, person-to-person transfer of techniques and secrets. His son Ugo Donà inherited this heritage and further developed it with scientific rigor: in 1939, after over three hundred experimental tests and months of daily melting, he obtained direct red glass with homogeneous cadmium sulfoselenide color, an extraordinary technical achievement that few in the world were able to replicate. It was also Ugo Donà who solved the problem of glass stability when, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the raw materials had changed and many historic recipes were at risk of being lost. Ugo passed the knowledge to Mario, and from Mario to his son MarcoAn unbroken chain, a century long, directly connecting the Spilimbergo workshop to the great Murano glassmaking tradition.

How an authentic Venetian enamel is created: the process

The process allows no shortcuts. Twenty-four hours of slow and meticulous gestation: the crucible, handmade in Murano according to tradition, is loaded with select raw materials and heated to extremely high temperatures inside a hand-built refractory brick kiln. Into this incandescent magma are introduced the colorant metal oxides—copper for certain greens and reds, cobalt for blues, nickel for grays and browns, and pure gold for the most precious hues—measured with a precision born of decades of experience and a knowledge unmatched in any manual.



The result, after controlled cooling and annealing, is so-called stable glass: a material that does not undergo chromatic alterations over time, is resistant to chemicals, temperature variations, and prolonged exposure to light, and is fully compatible with traditional mortars. Each batch undergoes chemical analysis to verify the glass's stability before being released for sale.

Why this distinction really matters

For a professional mosaicist, a restorer, or an architect choosing materials for a work destined to last, the difference between an authentic Venetian enamel and an industrial product bearing its name isn't a matter of principle. It's a practical, measurable, and visible question over time.

Ravenna's Byzantine mosaics are still intact after fifteen hundred years. Their durability is no miracle: it is the result of materials produced correctly, with the right raw materials, and the right technique. Authentic Venetian enamel, produced by direct casting with in-body coloring and controlled annealing, replicates those same physical and chemical conditions. An industrial product, no matter how well packaged, cannot.
